چکیده

The Gulf of Aden displays an ideal setting to study oblique rift processes since numerous structural data are available onshore and offshore, down to the ocean-continent transition (OCT). We investigate key observations by means of 3D numerical thermo-mechanical experiments on lithospheric scale. The Gulf formed with a rift-normal of -15° azimuth and under the influence of a supposedly 25° trending far field extension. By reproducing oblique rifting with 40°, we study the evolution of the Gulf of Aden in terms of crustal fault geometries and stress patterns from rift initiation to break-up. Our model suggests that intermediate faults dominate during the initial rift phase, followed by rift-parallel normal faulting at the rift flanks and strike-slip faults in the central part of the rift system. Upon break-up, displacement-orthogonal as well as intermediate faults occur. We compare our results to previous analogue experiments of oblique rifting on lithospheric scale as well as to the structural evolution of the Gulf of

Recent Geological Evolution of the Lake Abhe Basin Using Multitemporal Satellite Images

We used a multitemporal and multisensor satellite dataset to investigate the geological evolution of a tectonic basin of the East African Rift. The study area is the Lake Abhe-Goba'ad basin which is located at the border between Djibouti and Ethiopia. This area is the southern portion of a wide triangle-shaped depression, the Afar Depression. The Afar is one of the Earth's most geologically act...

Mode of lithospheric extension: Conceptual models from analogue modeling

[1] Comparison of analogue experiments at crustal and lithospheric scale provides essential information concerning the mode of deformation during lithospheric extension. This study shows that during extension, lithospheric deformation is controlled by the development of shear zones in the ductile parts. At lithospheric scale, the global deformation is initiated by the rupture of the brittle man...

MODELLING OF THE PERMEABILITY FOR COLUMNAR DENDRITE STRUCTURES DURING SOLIDIFICATION OF MUSHY ALLOYS

A numerical model has been developed for the determination of liquid flow permeability through columnar dendrite during growth. The model is inclusive two stages, first numerical evolution of the dendrite shape during growth, and second numerical determination of the interdendritic liquid permeability. Simulation results shown which solute concentration by evolution of dendrite shape could resu...

The role of structural inheritance in oblique rifting: insights from analogue models and application to the Gulf of Aden

The geometry and kinematics of rifts are strongly controlled by pre-existing structures that may be present in both the crust and the mantle lithosphere. In the Gulf of Aden, the Tertiary oblique rift developed through inherited Mesozoic extensional basins that trend orthogonal to the direction of Oligo-Miocene divergence. Such inheritance may produce lateral variations in crustal thickness and...
